the fifth gear not ingaging is a result of the actuator being broken or the pin for the slider being gone. your problem sounds like all your sycros and engage dogs are toast.

thank you for the reply junk yard 86 colt. it is funny the trans seems in good shape in cruising mode, good in for gas mileage, not good for my
adrenaline rush...feels like tranny has mind of its own and wants to shift
to a higher gear once revs get up there!! maybe you have a running
spare??

thank you for the info!! thanks for the link too!! are those places pretty
honest on their mileage/condition? was the hydraulic better than the
cable type for the c10's? i know there will be more parts to change
to convert to hydraulic, just wondering. thanks again!!

Actually this sounds like a problem I had with my 85. In My case it was caused by the Shift Stabilizer Bushing (on the shift control rods) being bad and the Vacuum actuator on the outside of the Trans which is what activates 5th. Of course the Trans shop took the whole tranny apart before they figured out that nothing inside was the problem. I'm not sure if your 86 has the same solid shifting arms as my 85 did, I know that it was later a cable or something else instead.

I hope this helps. I thought I needed a whole new tranny but it ended up being a few buck worth of parts. (plus all the labor to figure out all I needed was a few buck worth of parts :axe: )

Good luck
I wish I saw your post a little earlier, I haven't been around much since I sold the mirage (RIP)

I'd say the km206 found in the 87/88/89 C10 turbos is better although I've never driven any other kind. The km206 is also found in some 88/89 FWD colt/expo wagons and on the 89 c50 sedan 4g61 NA application too as well as the 4g37 DSM. Its not meant to hold a ton of power but because of the light weight nature of the c10 you should be OK.

Swapping one in would require more parts like the clutch, cylinders, pedal and lines as well as the shifter and shifter cables. If I had these parts readily available I would do the swap as opposed to trying to fix a broken km201 (or whatever your running now).

If you decide to do a km206 I know of some of parts interchangeability options. i.e. the clutch master from an Hyundia Scoupe is the same. clutch slave is the same from a NA DSM, (except for the push rod). You can also upgrade to an ACT clutch setup from a 4g37 DSM.

[edit] after writing all that... does your car have equal length axles?

Thanks for the info.

I haven't decided which way to go yet. I would like to go the simplier
way as much as possible...just keep it as original as possible...too bad
mitsu has made changes almost every year of manufacture..

hey truenative, was your tranny doing exactly same thing where as
the rpm goes higher(around 4k) it just disengages no matter what
gear? just pulling my hair how the shift stabilizer bushing will do that...
i guess the actuator has a say also on other gears? i have to check
my shift arms, i thought it was the solid one.

j2dapo, you are right. if i have those parts readily available, i would do
the switch...again i must have a good km206 first before i complete
the swap, that might be the hard part..thanks for your info. in case i do
go with a km206, i will definitely contact you!
