Finally some progress!

I was about to fit the 1G FMIC (IRC race core) under the factory cover!

The cover required just some minor modification on the bottom and on the inside. I would love to keep it stock looking, but I am afraid that I will have to add some holes for better I/C cooling.

Next on the list is wiring!

It's hard to tell on my phone but if your car is black them I'm jealous. I just picked up a white 93 AWD 5 spd summit shortbus w 140k. I'm having a hard time keeping myself from buying turbo swap parts.

Why did you ditch the 2.4? I hear the stock motors take fairly well to boost, of course assuming you do all the supporting mods.

My car is blue, but I might re-paint it Mitsubishi BBY color. Sorry, I am not a fan of black cars. Some cars do look good in black, but I hate keeping them clean.

I am also not a fan of 2.3/2.4 Engines, they make more torque but the same power. So your car will be just as fast but more likely to break drivetrain parts (compared to 2.0).

However, it is definitely much easier to make a Summit faster this way. Since my clutch was already slipping under NT power and block was smoking oil pretty bad, I wasn't about to invest any money into the stock set-up.

I finally finished my I/C pipes!

Upper pipe:

Lower Pipe:

At first, I thought I will have to modify the standard 16G j-pipe, cutting it shorter. But instead, I just put a 90deg coupler and routed lower than the "natural" path would suggest. This put the pipe in the area with more turbo to radiator clearance and really helped make everything fit together!

I did have to move the radiator 1/4" toward the driver's side in order to clear the upper I/C pipe.

good progress. as you may have seen im in the middle of the same swap! only obstacle i had over some of you other guys is going from auto to manual.

out of curiosity, what timing belt motor mount is that? i saw that you said it was a jay racing but couldnt find it on their website. i like the minimal design for sure!

few other questions:
1. are you modifying the summit engine harness to work w/ the 4G63?
2. do you happen to have the wiring schematics for the summit (im using the 4G63 harness so need to tie it in the chassis, etc)?
3. also, what did you do about the rear motor mount on your car vs the 4G63? im assuming your using your stock trans and it had the rear mount on it and your eliminating the one on the block of the 4G63...yeah? thats my next hurdle.

thanks and hopefully we'll both be up and running soon!

>out of curiosity, what timing belt motor mount is that?

That is a stock (93 Summit) motor mount. It is the “2G style” motor mount arrangement. As opposed to your, 92 Summit, which uses “1G style”.

>i saw that you said it was a jay racing but couldn’t find it on their website.

I am using Jay Racing alternator re-location kit.

>i like the minimal design for sure!

Well, you could just cut off the forward portion of your, 1G style, motor mount. Many 1G owners have done it. If you go to my garage on CarDomain and check out my old blue 92 GSX, you will see what I am talking about. It know that it looks like it would not be strong enough, but I have seen 1G’s with up 800hp getting away with it!

>are you modifying the summit engine harness to work w/ the 4G63?

I am re-pinning Summit harness to work with 2G ECU (running V3 ECM Link). So far, I had to remove so many factory wires, so I used them as newly designated 2G wires. And I still have plenty left over! I am keep track of everything in an excel spreadsheet, so it will be available for others to use ;).

>do you happen to have the wiring schematics for the summit (im using the 4G63 harness
>so need to tie it in the chassis, etc)?

I wasn’t able to find one for Expo/Summit, so I did one myself using ’94 FSM as a guide. I believe that I have captured 95% of wires. I too, was close to using a 1G harness, as have two spares, but in the end, I went with 2G ECU and original plugs. I just didn’t want to remove the dashboard.

>what did you do about the rear motor mount on your car vs the 4G63?

93-96 Summits use 2G style of motor mount. So they are totally different from your 1G style mounts. I would imagine that you should use your original mount, right?

>im assuming your using your stock trans and it had the rear mount on it and your
>eliminating the one on the block of the 4G63...yeah? thats my next hurdle.

Right, that is what I did, but do not believe that you can do that without upgrading your x-members to 93+ style.

BTW, I am using a stock tranny with upgraded, 4 spider center diff and DSM viscous coupling.

Took the Summit to the track with the “break-in”, 14b turbo. It ran the best of 13.3 at 103, which isn’t impressive on its own. Until you look at the set-up:

- 16psi of boost (dropping to 12’ish, partially induced by, now fixed, boost leaks)
- 3” downpipe connected to the stock Summit cat back exhaust by a 1 7/8” test pipe.
- Terrible 1.95 launches (caused by, now removed, restrictor in the clutch slave cylinder).
- Race weight 3220lbs (van, alone is 3010lbs).

My plan is to install an exhaust cut out, so that I can run 3” dumped exhaust, drop around 150lbs (rear bench seat, spare tire, 5-6 gallons of fuel and baby seats ;) ) and try to maintain 18-20 psi of boost.

I believe that mid 12’s are very possible… Lets just hope that weather cooperates… As we only have two weeks of racing left.

Anyway, this a video of my first run 13.6 at 100 (the only one I have)

I did figure it out (how would I race without a tach? ;)). I ended up installing a 1G tach in my Summit cluster. It was tricker than what I expected, but worked really well! This took me around 2-3 hours, next one would only take me less than an hour :supz:

So tonight I borrowed a set of slicks, dropped some weight (removed bench seats and a spare tire). Results were pretty good:

1.647 60' time
7.869 @87
12.445 @106.6

Shifting was just OK, as I was determined NOT to miss a shift.

Next run, pulled a bit of timing (I saw 4 deg timing being pulled due to knock) and a bit less boost. Unfortunately, my shifter knob spun off and I missed 3-4 shift

1.698 60' time
7.822 @88
12.451 @102.56

So, I probably left .2 sec a the track tonight, but that is OK, I am happy! Again, the response to the van has been amazing!

This was totally stock (not even ported) 14b running 23psi dropped to 16psi on pump gas. Race weight around 3050-3100lbs.

I have had a few people ask me if this was the fastest Vista/Summit/Expo van, but I honestly do not know. Do you guys know of any others?

I think it's safe to assume your the fastest expo/vista. Glad to see it finally up and running! Now put a real turbo on that thing and blow some minds! haha

Thats pretty funny you have the fastest vista with a 14b. I ran a 14.0 at 98mph with a 20g and supporting mods. 20 psi boost really bad trans though which i have since fixed. I would drop a lot of time by switching out to lighter wheels though for sure. Maybe next year ill try to hit 12's with mine. I know 11's sure as hell arent happening for mine. It was hard enough doing that with my 2500 lb awd colt.
