Here's a list of things that need to be changed right away. These aren't optional. Ignoring these items will definitely leave you stranded one day.

The timing belt - Unless you have a record of it being changed recently, change it now.

The ECU Capacitors - Again, unless you know they've been changed, you really need to change them. The cost of changing them is like 1/100 of buying a replacement ecu.

Things that are a good idea to replace. Items marked with a * can be replaced with upgraded parts.

- Spark Plugs
- Spark Plug Wires *
- Fuel Filter
- Air Filter *
- BISS O-ring
- tranny fluid
- engine oil
- radiator fluid
- tie rod ends
- ball joints
- wheel bearings
- all rubber parts (hoses, bushings)

Don't forget to change the oil in both the engine and tranny. Coolant is a good idea too.

As with any car, check the steering/suspension too.
  • Jack up one of the front wheels so it is off the ground. (Insert obvious safety disclaimer here)

Sit on the side of the car facing it and grab the top and bottom of the wheel and try to pull the top towards you while pushing the bottom away (and vice versa). If it wiggles, you need new ball joints.

Now grab the front and back side of the tire and try again. If it wiggles back and forth you need new tie rod ends. Now the exception with this one is if you are really trying hard to move it you will be flexing the tire on the other side of the car so you will get a little bit of wiggle. You are mainly looking for "slop" in the steering.

    Repeat on the other side.
One more thing, if it is made of rubber INSPECT IT. Coolant lines, Intake lines, CV Joint boots etc.

It doesn't hurt to replace things to get it all at a known state (well, it can hurt the wallet and sometimes the knuckles :))

Since I'm getting my engine from a junkyard, I'll be replacing:

- all the gaskets in the engine
- while im in there, checking all the valves and pistons for damage
- compression test the cylinders
- check out the turbo for rubbing/damage/play
- replace accesory belt while replacing timing belt

i think a leakdown test is more accurate than a compression test. lets you know if either an exhaust valve, intake valve, or rings are bad.

dont forget the balance shaft belt when you do your timing belt. or just install a eliminator kit
